FIFA World Cup Analysis

FIFA World Cup Analysis

Analysis of all the games played during the FIFA World Cup Tournament from the very first tournament in 1930 to the recently concluded one.

Our task for week three of the Side Hustle Boot Camp was to analyze the FIFA Football World Cup using data from 1930 to date with Power BI. The FIFA world cup tournament being a widely popular and well-documented event made it easy to get coherent datasets with details about the very first world cup in 1930 to the last in 2018. We only had to scrape the web for data for the just concluded 2022 world cup in Qatar which was also not too difficult to find. The dataset was sourced from Kaggle.com, Google Sports, statista.com and goal.com.

Loading and Cleaning the data

The dataset used was in excel workbook format. It had four sheets, the first, ‘world cup matches’ contained details of all the matches played in all the world cup tournaments. The second contained all the world cup winning titles and attendance per cup, the third sheet contained details of the most attended matches in all the world cups and the fourth contained all the teams that have participated in all the world cup tournaments and the number of goals scored.

After loading the data into Power BI we proceeded to clean it using Power Query with the following steps;

  • Checked for duplicates

  • Checked for blank cells

  • Removed unneeded columns

  • Checked and changed data types of various columns

The data file was relatively clean so we didn’t have much to do. At this point, the data was ready to use.

Visualizing the Data

Number of World Cup Winning Titles

We showed this as a KPI using a card visual.

Attendance

A table visual was used to show the number of people who attended the world cup per year. We also included a card showing total attendance.

Number of Teams

We used a clustered bar chart to visualize the number of teams per year. The year is on the y-axis while the count of teams is on the x-axis. We also included a card showing the total number of teams.

Goals

We used a card to show the total number of goals scored.

Matches Per Cup

We used a clustered bar chart to show the number of matches per cup. The year is on the y-axis and the number of matches is on the x-axis.

Goals per Team per world cup

We visualized this with a 3-column table. The column headers are world cup, teams and goals. We filtered it to show the top 11.

Matches with the Highest attendance.

We visualized this using a clustered bar chart. The matches are on the y-axis and the year is on the x-axis. We filtered it to show the top ten most attended matches.

Stadium with the highest attendance

We used a clustered bar chart to show the stadium with the highest attendance in each world cup. The stadium name is on the y-axis while the attendance is on the x-axis.

Winning Countries

We visualised this using a clustered bar chart showing winning countries by the count of wins. The winning countries are on the y-axis while the count of wins is on the x-axis.

Number of goals per country

We used a clustered bar chart to visualise the number of goals per country and we filtered it to show the top ten. The countries are on the y-axis while the number of goals is on the x-axis.

Match outcome by home and away

We used a column chart to show the match outcome by home and away. The x-axis had home, away and draw while the y-axis has the number of matches.
